The Top 5 Mahogany Decking Stains / Oils

Maintaining a mahogany hardwood deck is important if you want to keep the deck looking fresh while also maximizing the lifespan of the wood. A key part of any deck’s maintenance is the application of some finishing product to revitalize the timbers and protect their outer layers. Talking to experts around the outdoor hardwood lumber products industry has helped us produce the following recommendation of stains/oils.

  1. Cutek CD50 Oil

  • Pros: Cutek oil is easy to apply due to its consistency. It can be used on almost any exterior wood project. It comes as clear oil, which can be utilized to facilitate controlled silvering (weathering), or with one of ten choices of color tone. Cutek is known to not peel off, crack, or bubble. Its properties allow multiple layers to be applied, forming a protective bond with the outer wood.
  • Cons: Requires wood to be ‘virgin’ for successful application. Meaning prior stain needs to be fully removed before applying Cutek oil.

  1. Messmer’s UV Plus for Hardwoods

  • Pros: Messemer’s hardwood finish is engineered to have superior UV and mildew resistant qualities. It is also designed to penetrate into dense exotic hardwoods. Messemer’s finish is known to be able to protect timber at any stage of its life, as long as it is applied correctly. High percentage solid content indicates a mixture that if absorbed optimally will certainly provide protection from the elements.
  • Cons: Extremely dense woods such as Ipe often continue to weather at a natural rate, also often bolstered by environmental factors that impede absorption of the deck stain. Shady areas have sometimes been reported to mold.

  1. Penofin Hardwood Formula

  • Pros: Penofin formula is designed for exterior hardwoods, based on sustainably harvested Brazilin Rosewood oil. When properly applied to a deck, this oil penetrates into hardwood fibres to provide nourishment while still allowing the deck to breathe. It is known to absorb well even into dense hardwoods.
  • Cons: The two main variations of Penofin’s formula seem to be a trade-off. While one gives you the deep penetrating finish needed to restore wood fibres, it is not very resistant to mold or UV weathering.

  1. Timber Pro UV Deck Formula
  • Pros: It is available in clear at least 25 translucent color tones; Timber Pro UV formula is a general purpose protectant for decks that dries to a hardened finish. It is designed to entirely encapsulate the timber, but is made mostly from water-soluble plant oil resin. This means it is easy to apply and clean up. Known to be very durable
  • Cons: Its viscosity may make it difficult to apply in some environments. In certain areas, this product is very expensive.

  1. Cabot Australian Timber Oil
  • Pros: Easy to apply on a variety of outdoor timber projects. Cabot ATO brings out a natural rich color from every wood surface as it penetrates. Cabot’s oil contains a lot of natural resins to give wood the nourishment it needs.
  • Cons: Has been known to degrade very quickly, both in general and relative to other brands. Residual ‘puddling’ and/or ‘tacky’ areas have been observed. It seems to have difficulty with the densest hardwoods.
